Finding your happy is a key step in keeping stress-free.
No matter how much external effort we put into our “fight” against aging what ultimately matters is our inner state of wellbeing. Our biggest hindrance to staying youthful is not necessarily the passage of time nor the expected decay our bodies will experience over the course of a lifetime, but rather how well we feel about ourselves and our lives. It’s no secret that stress is the single most damaging factor in how quickly we can go from healthy and joyful to sick and sad.
We all experience stress at some point or other in our lives. For some of us stress becomes so ingrained it is in fact our constant state of being, particularly if the workplace and/or lifestyle is the type where relentless deadlines and toxic relationships are pervasive. We try to combat these noxious effects by exercising, eating healthy stuff, plying on skin creams. But stress is insidious, it interferes with our sleep and metabolism, and more often than not keeps us awake at night while digestion (and the safe disposal of its by-products) becomes compromised. That’s when we start getting sick, inside and out, and we start taking pills for each separate symptom. After a while all we can hope to achieve is to manage the situation. I wrote a bit about how quickly this escalates out of control in my previous article “What Being Healthy Means.”
Stress has been helpful in our development as human beings. As a survival tool - just as the ego is - it's seen us through fight or flight situations.
It’s part of our self-preservation mechanism, but it’s probably not meant to be permanently activated as it has been in our modern society, and quite likely not over non-life threatening concerns. It may be that, short of not being chased by man-eating beasts nor being at the mercy of the environment, we have aided and abetted the creation of a new palette of fearful things to replace the monsters in our collective past. It almost seems that, on some obscure level, we might be hooked on stress!
The list of stress-triggers is as endless as it is individual, but here are five ways you can help dissolve stress before it escalates out of control so you can stay youthful and beautiful inside and out:
1. Recognize that you are likely under stress right now
One of the biggest setbacks in dealing with stress is actually failing to face our stress and our stress triggers. Admitting that we are under stress, out loud, often starts a process of figuring out why and it helps us to step away from denial. Avoiding stress-triggers, specially conflicts, will see a cascade of body and mind malfunctions.
2. Conflicts are beneficial
Learning to see conflicts as necessary for personal growth will help you remain open-minded in any situation, and this state of mind helps neutralize stress. How you deal with conflicts and their underlying fears can really determine how smoothly your system will run under pressure. Instead of falling into the “Why me?” and “What’s next?” inner negative mantra try opening a conversation with the other person (or even with yourself, if what you are experiencing is an inner conflict) using something like: “I can see this is upsetting you. Tell me more.” and “What needs to happen to make this conflict be resolved?”
3. Practice Awareness
Awareness is not Mindfulness. All you need is to shift your attention to something specific that you are doing or observing, without emitting any judgement or interpreting, and without any effort. My go-to tool to enter into awareness is Reconnective Healing, and it’s as simple as tuning into the RH frequencies, either using your hands or not, and through them to the Field. The instant I connect with the infinite stress simply melts away.
4. Find your Happy in everything you do
Yes, that means even going to the dentist. Love and Joy are high vibration frequencies that have been proven in a multitude of experiments to be essential to the well-being of our cells. When our entire system -mind, emotions, body and spirit- is in tune with these frequencies blocks become undone and self-repair happens at an optimal level. It is also highly contagious, so the more you show your Happy out there the more people around you also start doing it to – it’s a great way to diffuse any potential conflicts before they even show up.
5. Know that you are exactly as you need to be at any time
The biggest bone of contention to our sense of beauty has to do with what we think others expect us to look like. When you finally allow yourself to know that you are perfect and beautiful right here right now your entire system aligns with this thinking and starts effecting the changes it needs to bring you to your true self and the best combination of traits that make you the unique human being you are.
